NORTHERN STUDENTS UNION (NSU) Prestigious AWARDS/Handing Over was a Blast!

This year’s Northern Student Union award day was held on Thursday,  7th May 2015 with the theme; "NSU Maiden Prestigious Awards;The Legacy from the North; Our 
Pride" According to the Outgoing President, the theme was chosen to highlight the significance people from the North are playing in the development of Ghana and to encourage them and others to do more.
 

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the President of the NSU Mr Mohammed Hardi Supremo. In the statement to commemorate the day, the President bemoaned the level of apathy shown by Northerners on Tertiary Campuses towards the activities of NSU. The event was designed to create a platform to inspire the Northern youth to be active participants in the development process of Ghana and recognise the personal Sacrifices and efforts made by people from the North and it's illustrious heroes.

As part of the activities that  marked the day, Awards were  given out to outstanding people that have played immeasurable roles in the lives of people, based on their personal career  achievements both in Government,Corporate ladder and their developmental agenda for the north. The family of His Excellency Alhaji Aliu Mahama of blessed memory was represented to take the award including the Executive director of Aliu Mahama foundation.
 

Honourable Abubakari Ibrahim dey(Salaga south MP) and Honourable Inusah Fuseini(Minister for roads,MP Tamale Central) also represented. All these great people shared their life story and encouraged us to be positive irrespective of the situation. Farouk Aliu Mahama (son of the late Vice President of Ghana) as part of his speech said"I feel emotional when saying this but my father use to tell me,I was never the son of a vice President,My mother use to sell Hausa KoKo in yendi where we use to sit by the pot with a single school uniform for the whole week but it never stopped me from  achieving my dreams.

You don't need to be born with the silver spoon before you make it. Just believe in yourself and as my Oldman use to say and "Do the right thing". The event was worth Attending and NSU UPSA wishes to take this opportunity to extend gratitude to all and sundry who in one way or the way made this memorable event possible.
 

NSU is a representation of students from the three Northern Regions of Ghana. The groups core mandate is to mobilize members from the Northern part of Ghana and enhance cultural, social and ethical values of people from the North.

HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF FINAL YEAR UPSA STUDENTS UNLIKELY TO GRADUATE

University of professional studies Accra (upsa) has undoubtedly won the confidence of the Ghanaian populace in the pursuit of business education. The school which was established to solely offer professional courses is now offering undergraduate and post graduate degree as well.

In 2011, a new grading system was introduced which has caused more harm than good to the entire students especially final year students resulting in a higher percentage of them not likely to graduate this year.

Information available indicate that 80% of the final year students are in third class and pass and appreciable percentage of them are likely not to graduate in August as a result of incomplete results(IC) and Resits.There is evidence that less than 1% of the entire population of final year students are in first class and second class upper leaving the rest in second class lower division.

We are of the view that this predicament is caused by lack of proper measures put in place to ensure proper running of the new grading system. Lecturers were not trained, students were not also made to understand how the new grading system works. It is pathetic, disheartening, totally confusing and hazardous to students.

Even though lecturers recognize that this system could enhance quality education, they are also with the believe that proper mechanisms and intensive education should have been put in place before the implementation of this system. Students returned from vacation only to realize a change in their results and the excuse they receive was that, they were graded with the old grading system. This is a clear indication that, this system leaves a lot of doubts in the minds of the student body.

The exorbitant fees paid by UPSA students is about twice the fees paid by other public universities and for them to graduate with this harsh grading system makes them uncompetitive in the job market and their dream to pursue higher education may be shattered.

All efforts by students to draw the attention of the university authorities on this disturbing situation proves futile as letters of appeals were sent to the appropriate authorities to correct the anomaly.

We therefore call on the appropriate bodies including ministry of education and other stakeholders to as a matter of urgency intervene before it is too late.

We believe that persons who have, through their unique qualities, selfless dedication and can-do spirit contributed in extraordinary ways to the development of the North need to be eulogized and encouraged to do more.The legacy of Our longest serving vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama of blessed memory will forever be treasured and he will forever remain a mentor to us all.
The achievements of other awardees is equally evident and can neither be overlooked nor over emphasized. Those who contributed immensely to the development of humanity, improving access to quality education and deepening our culture deserve to be honoured.That is the cardinal reason for these awards.
Through these awards we wish to appreciate and hail them as Mentors for the younger generation as they have brought heightened glory to the north and they are celebrated as worthy ambassadors. Northern students Union is a representation of the three Northern Regions of Ghana.
The Union's core mandate is to mobilize members from the Northern part of Ghana and enhance cultural, social and ethical values of people from the North. We hope this ceremony will become a yearly event where people from all economic and social backgrounds will be given meritorious awards.
