THE HORRORS OF BUILDING A GHANAIAN FUTURE

Ghana is a struggling third world nation relying heavily on wealthy nations and international organizations for development. Plagued with corruption and other political problems, the question of what lies in the future of the Ghanaian youth is certainly of essence to the Ghanaian citizens.

Unemployment figures has unending high growth rate and a young graduate chasing employment in some cases may be wasting his valuable time. Entrepreneurship is certainly a good option for the youth but then, we have seen many entrepreneurial ventures fall apart because the environment we are in favors foreign products. Local businesses barely have the power to compete with multibillion international corporations. Importation might be a good idea in some cases but over reliance on foreign goods can only help in worsening our situation.

Our educational system is purely theoretical, even in technical schools. It limits our creativity. It injects the zombie attitude in to school goers. Your thinking as a student is not of importance no matter how important your contribution might be, what you are taught is what you should master. The system doesn’t consider personal differences. The faster you can get things in to your head, the smarter you are. A country so backward in terms of development is still training its citizens to theoretically solve problems.

A nation once seen as the beacon of African development is battling with energy. Energy is the fuel for any industrial development of any nation in this world and if you fail to manage this one very important thing, then many if not all parts of the economy will plunge in to calamities. Among those calamities, high cost of production, low survival rate of local companies, exit of some companies, unemployment and etcetera. We can only hope for now that this crisis will end soon. So the nation can move forward to solving other very important matters and may be the youth will then have high hopes for a brighter future.

Due to poverty, every opportunity is a chance for exploitation. It’s a common attitude to amass enormous wealth when given a little power. Especially in our political setting. This attitude distorts our efforts to achieve communal development. I don’t see that attitude minimizing any time soon and if such a behavior continues, then we will need a miracle for a brighter future.

Majority of the citizens are poor and education is now for the rich. So what are we supposed to do? Find some handy apprenticeship job. Because going through expensive tuition might earn you a painful unemployment. No matter what happens, we are still Ghanaians. The only way to change things is if we realize that we are the cause of our problems and that it is only we, with the help of God can solve them. Let’s educate each other and eliminate all selfish mentalities to help transform the nation.
